Richard O’Brien will step down from his current role as First Team Manager at the club from the end of this current season. Richie has represented the club in virtually every role available – Player, Manager, Coach, Committee Member, Secretary and anything else you can imagine. He has been a pivotal part of the running of the club over the last number of years and unbelievable servant to SJG throughout.

The Gaffer was an inspirational figure in the battle to secure our clubs future when the end was looming and has worked tirelessly towards a better future for St. James’ Gate Football Club since the club was saved prior to the beginning of this season. It was with a very heavy heart that he came to the decision to step down from his current role – and not a decision that was made lightly.

The vision of this club has been discussed at length throughout the recent months, that vision includes the expansion of the club on the pitch with plans to add a number of teams to the SJG family over the coming seasons.

With this in mind we can now announce that while Richard will be stepping away from one role at the end of the season, he will be moving into a very important role within the club as he will be named the Director of Football at St. James’ Gate Football Club once he has completed his reign as first team manager. We feel this is an important time for the club and will require the correct people to oversee this expansion project, and we see Richard as the perfect person for the role.

This role will allow Richie to continue his efforts in bringing stability and growth back to the Iveagh Grounds, and also allow him to continue to progress through his coaching education.

There is plenty to be positive about for the future of St. James’ Gate Football club, this appointment will be the catalyst to move us forward and we will bring you some more information from Richie O’Brien over the coming days.

With regards to the the first team vacancy for the 2023/24 season, there will be more to follow on this matter.
